New Glarus Brewing Company
Brewery · New Glarus, Wisconsin
A brewery founded in 1993 in a Swiss-settled village south of Madison, whose farmhouse ale Spotted Cow has become the most sought-after beer in the Midwest for a reason that has nothing to do with scarcity of supply: the brewery withdrew from Illinois in the early 2000s and has sold ONLY within Wisconsin ever since, by choice. The rule is enforced — a New York bar was raided and fined for serving it in 2009 and a Minnesota publican was caught reselling kegs in 2015 — which has turned an ordinary well-made ale into something people cross state lines to drink and carry home by the case.
