New Orleans Botanical Garden

Botanical Garden · New Orleans, Louisiana

Twelve acres inside City Park laid out in the 1930s by the Works Progress Administration, and ONE OF THE FEW SURVIVING PUBLIC GARDENS IN AMERICA BUILT AS A NEW DEAL PROJECT — Art Deco architecture by Richard Koch, sculpture by Enrique Alférez, and planting designed by William Wiedorn, all of a piece and all still here. It went under eight feet of water after Katrina and lost most of its collection. What has been rebuilt is a subtropical garden that grows things no other American public garden can grow outdoors.

5 Victory Avenue, City Park, New Orleans, Louisiana, 70124, United States

Open most days with modest admission and reductions; children under a certain age free. CLOSED ON SOME WEEKDAYS and hours are shorter in winter — check before travelling. A SEPARATE TICKET FROM EVERYTHING ELSE IN CITY PARK: the park and the Besthoff Sculpture Garden are free, the art museum charges its own admission, and Storyland and Carousel Gardens charge separately again. The conservatory has closed for restoration at various points. Celebration in the Oaks runs from late November as a separately ticketed evening event.
