New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park

National Historical Park · New Orleans, Louisiana

The only unit of the National Park Service dedicated to a form of music, established in 1994 to interpret where jazz came from and why it came from here. It is small — a visitor centre in the old Perseverance Hall area at Louis Armstrong Park, plus programming across the city — and its best asset is not a building at all: RANGERS WHO ARE WORKING MUSICIANS give free live performances and talks several times a week. It is free, it is a few minutes from Congo Square, and almost no visitor to New Orleans knows it exists.

916 North Peters Street, New Orleans, Louisiana, 70116, United States

FREE, with no ticket. The visitor centre keeps daytime hours and federal holiday closures apply. THE VALUE IS THE PROGRAMME: ranger performances and talks run several times a week rather than daily, and outside those slots there is not a great deal to see — check the current calendar before travelling. The park has changed premises more than once, so verify the address as well as the times.
