New Plymouth and the Surf Highway
A Coastal City At The Foot Of Mount Taranaki, Home To The Award Winning Len Lye Centre Art Gallery, A 12.7 Kilometre Coastal Walkway Crossing The Sculptural Te Rewa Rewa Bridge, And A Run Of Black Sand Surf Beaches Down State Highway 45'S Surf Highway Toward Opunake · New Plymouth, Taranaki
New Plymouth is Taranaki's coastal city, built on black volcanic sand at the foot of Mount Taranaki's near-perfect cone, which rises inland as a constant backdrop rather than the point of a visit here. The city's centrepiece is the Len Lye Centre, an award-winning gallery with a mirrored stainless steel facade dedicated to the kinetic sculptor Len Lye, standing beside the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery on Queen Street. A 12.7 kilometre coastal walkway runs the length of the shoreline from Port Taranaki to the Waiwhakaiho River, crossing the sculptural Te Rewa Rewa Bridge, whose white ribbed arches echo both a wave and a whale skeleton against the mountain view. Inland from the walkway, Pukekura Park holds a spring-fed lake, a historic bandstand and the Bowl of Brooklands, lit up each summer for the Festival of Lights. South of the city, State Highway 45, known locally as Surf Highway 45, traces the coast past black-sand surf beaches toward Opunake. New Plymouth stays a working port and arts city rather than a resort town, with a compact centre built for walking.

The coastal walkway, Te Rewa Rewa Bridge and Pukekura Park are open at all hours with free entry, though the park's lit-up summer festival display runs only on confirmed seasonal evening dates. The Len Lye Centre and Govett-Brewster Art Gallery keep standard daytime museum hours and typically close one day a week, with public holiday hours varying - confirm the current timetable before a special trip. Surf Highway 45's beaches have no gate and no fixed hours, but have no lifeguard patrol outside a short confirmed summer season at best, and several stretches have none at all.
