New River Gorge Bridge

Iconic Bridge · Lansing, West Virginia

A steel arch carrying US Route 19 across the New River Gorge 876 feet above the water, finished in 1977. It was the longest single-span steel arch bridge in the world until 2003 and remains the longest in the Western Hemisphere, and it replaced a 40-minute descent to a one-lane bridge at the bottom of the gorge with a crossing that takes under a minute. It is the image on the West Virginia state quarter and the most photographed structure in the state.

Visible and viewable at any hour. Canyon Rim Visitor Center generally 9 AM - 5 PM with reduced winter hours. The deck is open to pedestrians only on Bridge Day, the third Saturday in October. Free.
