New York Historical
History Museum · New York, New York
NEW YORK'S FIRST MUSEUM, founded 1804, on Central Park West since 1908 — and as of 2026 roughly a third larger. ⚠ IT DROPPED "SOCIETY" FROM ITS NAME, having judged the word too exclusive, and its $175 million TANG WING FOR AMERICAN DEMOCRACY OPENED ON 18 JUNE 2026, designed by Robert A. M. Stern, who died before it was finished. It holds all 435 of Audubon's Birds of America watercolours and the largest Tiffany lamp collection anywhere.

⚠ THE NAME CHANGED — it is no longer the New-York Historical Society. ⚠ THE $175 MILLION TANG WING FOR AMERICAN DEMOCRACY OPENED ON 18 JUNE 2026, adding roughly a third to the museum: any guidebook older than mid-2026 is out of date. Generally open Tuesday to Sunday with a later Friday close. ⚠ A PAY-WHAT-YOU-WISH FRIDAY EVENING HAS RUN HISTORICALLY but the 2026 expansion may have changed it — check nyhistory.org. ⚠ THE AMERICAN LGBTQ+ MUSEUM IN THE TANG WING IS NOT OPEN YET: the institution says late 2027, news reports say 2028.
