New York State Capitol

Historic Site · Albany, New York

Thirty-two years in the building, 1867 to 1899, at a cost of some $25 million — ⚠ THE MOST EXPENSIVE GOVERNMENT BUILDING IN AMERICA WHEN IT WAS FINISHED — and designed by five architects in succession who could not agree, producing a Romanesque, Renaissance and Second Empire hybrid with NO DOME. Its MILLION DOLLAR STAIRCASE carries 77 carved portraits and a great many faces nobody has identified.
