Newark Main Street and the University of Delaware
Downtown Commercial Street Of The City Of Newark In New Castle County And The Adjoining Central Campus Of The University Of Delaware, The State'S Flagship Public University, Which Traces Its Roots To A School Founded In 1743 · Newark, Delaware
Newark is Delaware's college town, a small city in the north-west corner of the state that grew up around the University of Delaware, which traces its roots to a school founded in 1743 and now has a large student body. The visit is really two places side by side. Main Street is a long, busy strip of restaurants, bars, coffee shops, bookstores and clothing stores in a mix of old brick buildings and newer apartment blocks, lively most evenings during term. Just south of it, The Green is the historic heart of the campus, a long tree-lined lawn framed by red-brick Georgian-style buildings, with Memorial Hall at one end and Mitchell Hall's white columns nearby. The university's small art galleries in Old College and Mechanical Hall are usually free, and the UD Creamery sells ice cream made with milk from the university's own dairy herd. Farther south are Delaware Stadium and the Bob Carpenter Center. It is a pleasant half day rather than a destination, busiest and priciest on move-in, game and graduation weekends.
East Main Street and Academy Street, Newark, Delaware, 19711, United States
Main Street and The Green are public and open at all hours, and walking the campus grounds is free. What changes a visit is the university calendar. During term, Main Street is busy from late morning to late night; during winter break and summer many student-oriented places cut their hours or close some days. The university galleries in Old College and Mechanical Hall are usually free but open only a few days a week, often closed Mondays and during breaks, and between exhibitions - confirm before you go. The UD Creamery keeps seasonal hours, shorter in winter - confirm. Campus buildings such as Memorial Hall are for students and staff; do not expect to wander inside. Parking on and near Main Street is paid at meters, pay stations or by app during posted hours, with municipal lots and a garage; enforcement is strict. Campus lots are permit-only on weekdays. On move-in weekend, graduation weekend and home football Saturdays, roads jam, lots fill and hotels sell out or raise rates sharply - check the calendar first.
