Neys Provincial Park
A Shoreline Park With A Sandy Beach Of Rolling Sand Dunes, A Former Prisoner Of War Camp Site, The Coldwell Peninsula View, A Campground, A Woodland Caribou Herd On Offshore Islands And Trails Of Boreal Forest. A Stop On The Lake Superior Route With A Calm Cove For Cold Water Swimming · Marathon, Ontario
Neys Provincial Park lies on the north shore of Lake Superior beside the Trans-Canada Highway, roughly 30 km west of Marathon near the tiny community of Coldwell (confirm distance). Its great gift is a long curve of pale sand backed by low dunes, grassy ridges and boreal forest, with rocky headlands of ancient Shield stone at each end and the broad horizon of the biggest freshwater lake on earth in front. Behind the beach, a short trail leads to the memory of Camp 100, a prisoner-of-war camp that held German captives in the 1940s, and the shoreline looks out over islands that painters of the north knew well. Neys is a quiet park with a campground, a beach, a visitor centre in season, and forest trails that suit an easy walk. The water stays cold even in August, but the sand is wide, the sunsets are huge, and the park makes a calm stop between Thunder Bay and Sault Ste. Marie. Ontario Parks sets entry and camping rates (confirm all dates and fees).

Neys is a seasonal Ontario Parks site, with the campground, beach and visitor centre running from about mid May to early October and the busiest weeks in July and August (confirm dates). Day use follows daylight, and campers follow the check-in and check-out times given at booking. The gate and office may be unstaffed outside the season, and winter access is limited to what the plowed road and the weather allow. Daylight lasts past ten in June and ends before five in December, so plan a beach walk around the sun, and confirm dates with Ontario Parks before a long drive along the lake.
