Nicollet Mall

Promenade · Minneapolis, Minnesota

The pedestrian spine of downtown Minneapolis — twelve blocks of Nicollet Avenue closed to general traffic since 1968 and rebuilt again in 2017, lined with restaurants, department stores and office towers. Mary Tyler Moore threw her hat in the air here in 1970 and there is a statue where she did it. It is also the best place to understand the Minneapolis skyway system: eleven miles of enclosed bridges linking eighty blocks at first-floor level, the largest such network in the world, built because this city spends five months below freezing.

Nicollet Mall between Washington Avenue and Grant Street, Minneapolis, Minnesota, 55402, United States

A public street, open at all hours and free. Shops and restaurants keep their own hours and downtown empties considerably after the working day. The Minneapolis Farmers Market runs on Nicollet on Thursdays through the warm months. The skyway system connecting to the mall is free and public but CLOSES WHEN ITS BUILDINGS CLOSE — generally early evening and earlier at weekends.
