Ninety Six National Historic Site

National Historic Site · Ninety Six, South Carolina

A backcountry crossroads in the western Piedmont where an eight-pointed earthen star fort still stands, and where Nathanael Greene besieged a loyalist garrison for twenty-eight days in 1781 and failed to take it. The earthwork survives because nobody built over it. What makes the site unusual is that the siege works are legible on the ground, including the remains of the mine tunnel the Americans dug toward the fort and never finished.

984 State Highway 248, Ninety Six, South Carolina, 29666, United States

FREE. The grounds and the interpretive trail are open daily from dawn to dusk. The visitor centre generally opens daily around 9 AM to 5 PM, with closure on major federal holidays, so verify before travelling. The site is rural and lightly staffed, and there is very little nearby, so arriving to a closed visitor centre is a longer disappointment here than at most parks.
