Niobrara National Scenic River
National Scenic River (National Park Service, Wild And Scenic Rivers Act) · Valentine, Nebraska
The Niobrara National Scenic River is a roughly 76-mile stretch of the Niobrara River in north-central Nebraska, running east from near Valentine, protected by Congress in 1991 under the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act and administered by the National Park Service with local partners. The river runs clear and shallow over sand, fed by groundwater seeping out of the Sandhills, through a canyon of sandstone and limestone bluffs a few hundred feet high. Dozens of small spring-fed waterfalls pour off the side canyons, including Smith Falls, the tallest waterfall in Nebraska. The valley is often described as a biological crossroads where eastern hardwoods, western pine, northern birch and prairie meet. Most visitors come to float: by canoe, kayak or inner tube, downstream from the Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge on a gentle current, arranged through outfitters in Valentine. There is no gate or visitor centre: most banks are private land, the float season runs roughly from late spring to early autumn, and summer weekends bring big, loud tubing crowds.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: the river itself is open all year, but the float season runs roughly from late May to early September, with outfitters opening in the morning, often around 8 or 9 am, and taking last launches in the early afternoon so floaters reach the take-out before evening; check. Smith Falls State Park is open daily, with a seasonal campground. The Fort Niobrara refuge wildlife drive is usually open in daylight and its visitor centre keeps limited seasonal hours. The traps that ruin a day are arriving on a summer weekend without an outfitter booking, launching late and missing the shuttle's last pick-up, a thunderstorm that cancels the float, and turning up in early May or late September when most outfitters are closed. Confirm current times before relying on them.
