Nipigon and Red Rock
Two Small Towns At The Northern End Of Lake Superior Where The Nipigon River Enters The Lake, Known For Brook Trout Fishing On The River, The Nipigon River Bridge On The Trans Canada Highway, A Marina, The Red Rock Indian Residential School History And Views Across The Lake. A Stop On The Long Drive Around Lake Superior · Nipigon, Ontario
Nipigon and Red Rock are two small towns at the north end of Lake Superior, about 100 km east of Thunder Bay along the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 11/17). Nipigon sits beside the Nipigon River, which carries water from Lake Nipigon down to the lake, and the river is famous among anglers for its brook trout, including a record fish caught in 1916 (confirm the weight and date). The Nipigon River Bridge carries the highway across the river and is a key link in the national road network. Red Rock lies a short drive south on the shore of Nipigon Bay, with a marina, a paper mill history, a beach and the former site of an Indian residential school, whose history is told by local and Indigenous groups (confirm the wording and any memorial). The towns are small, with limited services, but they offer a river, a marina, an excellent view across the lake and a quiet stop on the long drive around Lake Superior.

The towns and the waterfront are open all year, and walking the river bank, the marina area and the streets costs nothing at any daylight hour. Museums, visitor information desks and the marina keep seasonal hours, often from late May or June to early September, and may close or work by appointment in winter, so confirm times before you go. Cafes and shops keep small-town hours and can close on Sundays and holidays. Fishing seasons, boat launches and charter services depend on ice and weather. Winter is long and cold, with the lake ice and snow shaping most outdoor plans, so check road reports before you drive.
