Noh Gonbad Mosque

Archaeological · Balkh, Balkh

Believed to be the oldest Islamic building in Afghanistan and among the earliest surviving anywhere in the eastern Islamic world: a nine-domed mosque outside Balkh — locally called Haji Piyada — dated by scholars between the early 8th and mid 9th century, with one study placing it at 794 CE. All nine domes fell long ago; what stands are three massive columns and two arches carrying stucco decoration of astonishing quality in early Abbasid and Samanid styles, now consolidated under a protective shelter by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture with international partners. It sits on UNESCO's Tentative List. For architectural pilgrims, this modest ruin is one of the most important rooms in Central Asia.
