Nopiming Provincial Park

Manitoba Provincial Park Of About 1,430 Square Kilometres On The Ontario Border; Nopiming Is Anishinaabe For Entrance To The Wilderness, And The Park Adjoins Atikaki And The Pimachiowin Aki World Heritage Site · Lac du Bonnet, Manitoba

NOPIMING IS ANISHINAABE FOR ENTRANCE TO THE WILDERNESS, and the name is literal: the park sits on the edge of the great roadless block of eastern Manitoba and western Ontario, adjoining ATIKAKI and forming part of the approach to the PIMACHIOWIN AKI WORLD HERITAGE SITE. It covers about one thousand four hundred and thirty square kilometres of Canadian Shield - bare pink and grey granite, jack pine, black spruce and a very great deal of water - and unlike its roadless neighbours IT HAS A ROAD THROUGH IT, Provincial Road 314, which makes this the accessible face of a landscape that is otherwise fly-in only. There are campgrounds, cabins, canoe routes, and some of the oldest exposed rock on earth. The park holds a small woodland caribou population and the BLACK LAKE and TULABI FALLS areas are the usual bases. It is about two hours from Winnipeg.

Provincial Road 314, eastern Manitoba on the Ontario border, Lac du Bonnet, Manitoba, Canada

THE PARK IS OPEN YEAR-ROUND WITH A MANITOBA PARKS VEHICLE PERMIT required, sold daily or annually and inexpensive. THE MAIN SEASON RUNS ROUGHLY MID-MAY TO EARLY SEPTEMBER, when the campgrounds, launches and day-use areas operate; camping is first-come or reservable depending on the campground and fills on summer long weekends given the proximity to Winnipeg. PROVINCIAL ROAD 314 RUNS THROUGH THE PARK and is the access spine, though SECTIONS ARE GRAVEL AND ROUGH. CANOE ROUTES RUN FROM THE ROAD INTO THE BACKCOUNTRY and toward Atikaki; backcountry camping is permitted. WINTER BRINGS SNOWMOBILING, ICE FISHING AND SKIING. FOREST FIRE CLOSURES ARE COMMON in dry summers and are absolute - eastern Manitoba has seen major fires and this park has been closed by them.
