Norfolk Botanical Garden
Botanical Garden · Norfolk, Virginia
A hundred and seventy-five acres on Lake Whitehurst, cleared out of swamp in 1938 by two hundred and twenty WPA workers — two hundred of them African American women, paid twenty-five cents an hour, who planted four thousand azaleas by hand. The garden buried that story for most of a century and now tells it properly, with a memorial to the workers among the beds they planted.
6700 Azalea Garden Road, Norfolk, Virginia, 23518, United States
Generally 9 AM - 5 PM daily with longer hours in spring and summer and a shorter winter week. Boat and tram tours are seasonal and separately charged. Peak azalea season is mid-April.
