Norman Bird Sanctuary

Bird Sanctuary · Middletown, Rhode Island

Three hundred and twenty-five acres of hay field, woodland and rocky ridge in Middletown, founded in 1949 and run as a private non-profit refuge and environmental education centre. Seven miles of trail cross it, the best known climbing to Hanging Rock — a puddingstone ridge with a long view over Sachuest Point, Second Beach and the ocean. There is a visitor centre and a nineteenth-century barn fitted out as a small natural history museum, and unlike almost everything else on Aquidneck Island it is open every day of the week.

583 Third Beach Road, Middletown, Rhode Island, 02842, United States

Open daily, 9:00 to 17:00 — unusually reliable for Aquidneck Island, where most attractions close seasonally or midweek. Admission is charged, modestly, because this is a private non-profit funding its own education programmes rather than a state park; members go free and children are reduced. Free parking on site, in a small car park that fills on fine weekends. ⚠ DOGS ARE NOT PERMITTED ON THE HANGING ROCK TRAIL, which is the most popular route on the property — confirm the policy for the other trails before travelling if you have a dog with you. Some areas close seasonally to protect ground-nesting birds. Seven miles of trail, a visitor centre and a nineteenth-century barn fitted out as a natural history museum.
