North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher

Aquarium · Kure Beach, North Carolina

One of three state aquariums in North Carolina, on Pleasure Island beside the Fort Fisher earthworks, built around a two-hundred-thousand-gallon Cape Fear Shoals tank holding sharks and a full reef community. Its best-known resident has long been an albino American alligator. It is modest in scale next to the great city aquariums and it is very well suited to what it actually is: a family half-day beside a beach, a Civil War fort and a ferry.

900 Loggerhead Road, Kure Beach, North Carolina, 28449, United States

Generally 9 AM to 5 PM daily, with last admission before closing; closed Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Ticketed. It is one of three North Carolina Aquariums, all state-operated since 1976 and AZA-accredited. ⚠ IT SITS BESIDE FORT FISHER STATE HISTORIC SITE AND THE FERRY TERMINAL, so the three combine naturally into a day on Pleasure Island.
