North Carolina Zoo
Zoo · Asheboro, North Carolina
The world's largest natural habitat zoo, with around five hundred acres developed inside a two-thousand-acre boundary in the Uwharrie hills, and one of only two state-supported zoos in the United States - the other is in Minnesota. It holds about seventeen hundred animals of more than two hundred and fifty species, in two large sections representing Africa and North America. The scale is the whole design: animals are at genuine distance in open habitat rather than in enclosures you look down into.
4401 Zoo Parkway, Asheboro, North Carolina, 27205, United States
Open daily, generally 9 AM to 5 PM with last admission an hour or two before closing; longer in summer. Closed Christmas Day. ⚠ THE SHUTTLE BETWEEN THE AFRICA AND NORTH AMERICA SECTIONS IS NOT OPTIONAL FOR MOST VISITORS - the two are a long walk apart and the tram is how you cover it. Some habitats close in cold weather. Parking is free.
