North Conway
Village In The Town Of Conway And The Hub Of The Mount Washington Valley; Gateway To The Eastern White Mountains, Known For Tax Free Outlet Shopping (New Hampshire Has No General Sales Tax), Cranmore Mountain And The Conway Scenic Railroad. · North Conway, New Hampshire
A busy mountain village in the town of Conway and the hub of the Mount Washington Valley, the main base for visiting the eastern White Mountains. Its Main Street, New Hampshire Route 16, runs past inns, outdoor shops, restaurants and a village green with a long view north to the high peaks. At its centre the yellow 1874 railroad station is the home of the Conway Scenic Railroad, whose vintage trains run down the valley and, on longer trips, up through Crawford Notch. Just west, the granite walls of Cathedral Ledge and Whitehorse Ledge rise above Echo Lake State Park; you can drive to the top of Cathedral for a cliff-edge view, or swim in the lake below while climbers work the rock overhead. Cranmore Mountain, a ski area since the 1930s, sits at the edge of the village. South of the centre, Route 16 becomes a long strip of outlet stores, where New Hampshire's lack of a general sales tax draws shoppers from all over New England. On foliage and holiday weekends the traffic is famous, and a room booked late is expensive or unavailable.
