North Dakota Heritage Center and State Museum

History Museum · Bismarck, North Dakota

The state's official history museum, on the Capitol grounds in Bismarck, running from the Cretaceous to the present in four galleries. It holds Dakota, a mummified Edmontosaurus recovered in the state's badlands with fossilised skin still on the bones, one of the most complete dinosaur mummies ever found. The rest is the human sequence - Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara material, the fur trade, homesteading, the bonanza farms, the two oil booms - and all of it is free.

612 East Boulevard Avenue, Bismarck, North Dakota, 58505, United States

FREE and open daily, generally 8 AM to 5 PM on weekdays with shorter weekend hours, closed on state holidays. No admission charge, no ticket and free parking on the Capitol grounds. The cafe keeps shorter hours than the galleries. The State Historical Society of North Dakota runs the state historic sites from this building, and the front desk is the most reliable single place to check which of those seasonal sites are currently open.
