North Dakota State Capitol

Tower · Bismarck, North Dakota

A 21-storey Art Deco tower on a 160-acre campus above Bismarck, built between 1931 and 1934 after fire destroyed the previous capitol, and still the tallest habitable building in the state. North Dakota was broke when it went up, which is why the design is a stripped limestone-clad slab rather than a dome - it was cheaper, and the legislature was not in a mood for ornament. Inside, the lobby is bronze, black walnut and Belgian marble, and there is a free observation deck on the eighteenth floor.

600 East Boulevard Avenue, Bismarck, North Dakota, 58505, United States

FREE, with free parking. The building is open to visitors during weekday business hours, generally 8 AM to 5 PM, and ⚠ MOST OF IT IS SEEN ONLY ON A FREE GUIDED TOUR run on weekdays - at weekends and on state holidays access is limited or unavailable. The eighteenth-floor observation deck is generally open during business hours and is free. The grounds and arboretum trail are open all year. Check the tour schedule with the Capitol Complex office before travelling, and note the campus postcode is 58505 rather than an ordinary Bismarck code.
