North Hatley
A Picturesque Lake Village With Heritage Inns, Galleries, A Theatre, Boat Trips On Lake Massawippi And A Strong English Speaking And Artistic History. A Romantic Weekend Stop In The Eastern Townships, With A Pace Of Life That Feels Leisurely · North Hatley, Quebec
North Hatley is a village of about 700 people on the north shore of Lake Massawippi in the Eastern Townships, around 15 km south-east of Sherbrooke and reached by Route 108 (confirm distances). From the 1860s wealthy families, many from the southern United States, built summer houses and inns on the lake, and the village kept an English-speaking, artistic character that still shapes its galleries, cafes and small theatre. Today it is a compact, walkable place of a few streets, a public beach and several heritage inns, set on a lake about 15 km long with wooded hills behind. It suits a slow weekend of dining, swimming, paddling and browsing rather than a checklist of sights, and it is quiet from November to April. Nearby are Sherbrooke, the copper mining heritage site at Capelton and the farms and vineyards of the surrounding townships. Allow half a day for the village and lake, or a night in an inn.

The inn dining rooms serve dinner and sometimes lunch, mostly by reservation, and the summer theatre plays on scheduled evenings from about June to September (confirm). From November to April several cafes and galleries close or open only on weekends, so phone before driving out from Sherbrooke.
