North Higgins Lake State Park
Michigan State Park · Roscommon, Michigan
North Higgins Lake State Park sits on the northern shore of Higgins Lake near Roscommon in the northern Lower Peninsula. The lake is known for unusually clear water over pale sand, which is why divers and snorkelers come as well as swimmers. The park is wooded, with pines shading the campground and a swimming beach on the lake. On the grounds is a museum about the Civilian Conservation Corps, the 1930s work program that planted trees and built many Michigan parks - confirm hours and season, since it is seasonal. South Higgins Lake State Park is a separate park on the opposite end of the lake, and Hartwick Pines is a short drive away. This is a summer park: July and August bring full campgrounds, a busy beach and heavy boat traffic. It suits families and campers who want clear water and shade, not wild solitude. A Michigan Recreation Passport is needed for vehicles. Allow half a day for a visit, or a weekend if camping.

Michigan state parks are commonly open year-round from about 8 AM to 10 PM for day use, and a Recreation Passport is needed for each vehicle - confirm current hours with the Michigan DNR before you go. The beach is staffed only informally, if at all, so check whether a lifeguard is posted. The Civilian Conservation Corps museum on the grounds is seasonal, usually open on set summer days and closed in winter - confirm days and hours, and expect it to be shut on a quiet weekday in spring or autumn. The campground is busiest from late June to Labor Day and reservations are strongly advised for summer weekends. In winter the park is quiet and the trails are used for skiing and snowshoeing when snow cover allows.
