North Shore Scenic Drive
All American Road · Duluth, Minnesota
Highway 61 from Duluth to the Canadian border at Grand Portage — about 150 miles with Lake Superior on one side and the Sawtooth Mountains on the other, running past eight state parks, a dozen rivers that fall into the lake, and the most photographed lighthouse in America. It is designated an All-American Road, the top federal scenic classification. Bob Dylan grew up at the Duluth end of it and named an album after the road. In the first three weeks of October it is one of the great drives in North America and the traffic reflects that.
Minnesota Highway 61, Duluth, Minnesota, 55804, United States
Open year round as a public highway, plowed as a priority route in winter though sections can close in lake-effect storms. Individual state parks along the route keep their own hours and most require a Minnesota state park vehicle permit; Gooseberry Falls is free. Services and fuel thin considerably north of Grand Marais.
