Northern Rocky Mountains Provincial Park

British Columbia Provincial Park Of About 6,650 Square Kilometres Within The Muskwa Kechika Management Area; Part Of One Of The Largest Intact Wilderness Systems In North America, With Wildlife Densities Compared To Pre Settlement Times · Fort Nelson, British Columbia

Northern Rocky Mountains Provincial Park is about six thousand six hundred and fifty square kilometres of the Canadian Rockies at their northern end, and it forms part of the MUSKWA-KECHIKA MANAGEMENT AREA - a protected and managed system of some sixty-four thousand square kilometres that is among the LARGEST INTACT WILDERNESS SYSTEMS IN NORTH AMERICA. What makes it remarkable is the wildlife: biologists have described the densities of grizzly, wolf, moose, elk, caribou, Stone sheep and mountain goat here as approaching what the Rockies held before European settlement, all of it in one functioning predator-prey system across a landscape with essentially no roads. THE ALASKA HIGHWAY CLIPS THE NORTHERN EDGE and gives the only easy view in. Beyond that it is horse trips, float planes and river travel - the Muskwa, the Gataga, the Kechika - and outfitters who have worked here for generations. Almost no independent visitors go.

South of the Alaska Highway, Muskwa-Kechika, north-eastern British Columbia, Fort Nelson, British Columbia, Canada

NO GATE, NO VISITOR CENTRE AND ALMOST NO INFRASTRUCTURE. The season is ROUGHLY LATE JUNE TO EARLY SEPTEMBER, bounded by snow on the passes. ACCESS IS BY FLOAT PLANE, BY HORSE TRIP OR BY RIVER - there are NO ROADS INTO THE PARK, and the Alaska Highway only clips the northern edge. MOST VISITORS COME THROUGH LICENSED GUIDE-OUTFITTERS, several of whom have operated in this country for generations and who run horse expeditions of one to three weeks. BC PARKS PERMITS BACKCOUNTRY CAMPING with modest fees and expects complete self-sufficiency. AUTUMN IS GUIDE-OUTFITTER HUNTING SEASON across the Muskwa-Kechika. River trips on the Muskwa, Gataga and Kechika are multi-week expeditions requiring a float plane drop. No cell coverage anywhere. Confirm everything with BC Parks well in advance.
