A Historic Cree Community And Hudson'S Bay Company Post Where The Nelson River Leaves Lake Winnipeg, With A Historic Fort, A Rapids On The Nelson, The Rossville Mission Where The Cree Syllabary Was Used And An Annual Treaty Days Gathering. A Northern Manitoba River Community Reached By Road · Norway House, Manitoba

Norway House is a large Cree community on the Nelson River at the north end of Lake Winnipeg, about 800 km by road north of Winnipeg, with roughly 5,000 people living on the Norway House Cree Nation lands. The name comes from Norwegian workers who built a Hudson Bay Company post here in 1814, and the post became the crossroads of the fur trade, where York boats from Hudson Bay met brigades from the west. Treaty adhesions were signed here in 1875, and nearby Rossville was the mission where the Methodist James Evans devised the Cree syllabic script in 1840. Today the community is a hub of northern Manitoba, with a fort museum, a fishing tradition, boat building and a lively summer Treaty Days gathering. The Nelson River rapids and Playgreen Lake lie beside town, and the Hayes River canoe route to York Factory starts nearby. Visitors should ask permission before using community land and confirm dates for events.
