Nozawa Onsen is a hot spring village in the hills of northern Nagano, a place famous for its thirteen free public bathhouses, called soto-yu, run by the village and open to visitors - confirm the number. Small wooden halls stand on narrow, steaming lanes between old inns, shops and rows of steaming spring pipes. The water is very hot, often well above what most visitors expect. Each bath is shared first with locals, who rely on them as a daily wash, so quiet manners matter. In winter the village doubles as a large ski area, and the fire festival, Dosojin, held on 15 January, sees men defend a wooden shrine from a burning torch assault - confirm the details. Oyaki, stuffed dumplings of local vegetables, are the village snack. It suits couples, skiers and anyone who likes baths in a real village. It is worth a night, and a quick day trip from Nagano feels short. Summer is quiet and cool, with empty lanes.
