Nuʻuanu Pali Lookout

State Wayside · Honolulu, Hawaii

A lookout at a notch in the windward cliff of the Koʻolau range, at the head of Nuʻuanu Valley on Oahu, with a panoramic view over the windward coast toward Kaneohe and Kailua. The Pali Highway connecting the windward towns with downtown Honolulu runs through tunnels bored into the cliff below it. It is also the site of the 1795 Battle of Nuʻuanu, in which Kamehameha I completed his conquest of Oahu by driving the defenders over this cliff.

Nuʻuanu Pali Drive, Honolulu, Hawaii, United States

Open during daylight hours, generally from early morning to early evening, and the gate is closed overnight. ⚠ OUT-OF-STATE VISITORS PAY A PARKING FEE; Hawaii residents with ID are exempt. ⚠ IT IS RELENTLESSLY WINDY - this is a notch in a cliff wall and the trade winds funnel through it hard enough to take a hat, a phone or a car door. Cloud and rain arrive without warning. The lookout is a few steps from the car park.
