Nuuksio National Park
Forest And Lake National Park Within An Hour Of Helsinki, With The Haltia Finnish Nature Centre · Espoo, Uusimaa
Nuuksio is the national park closest to Helsinki, a block of lakes, rocky hills and spruce and pine forest spread over parts of Espoo, Vantaa and Kirkkonummi, roughly 30-40 km north-west of the city centre. It was founded in 1994 to protect one of the largest unbroken forest areas in the capital region, and for most visitors it is the easiest way to taste Finnish wilderness without leaving the city behind: you can take public transport there in about an hour, walk a marked loop past lakes and cliffs, cook sausages on a free campfire site and be back in Helsinki for dinner. The Siberian flying squirrel is the park's symbol, a nocturnal glider that lives in old forest and is very rarely seen. Beside the park, Haltia, the Finnish Nature Centre, is a striking wooden building with an exhibition on Finland's nature, a restaurant and a shop. The honest caveat: Nuuksio is gentle rather than wild, and on sunny weekends the popular trailheads are genuinely crowded, with full car parks and queues at fire sites.
