Nyerere National Park is the northern part of the old Selous Game Reserve, set up in 1922 and made a UNESCO site in 1982. In 2019 the northern section became a national park, about 30,000 sq km in the wider area along the Rufiji river in southern Tanzania. It is wild and quiet: you can take boat safaris on the Rufiji and Lake Tagalala past hippos, crocodiles and elephants coming to drink, game drives, and walking safaris with armed rangers in some areas. It holds one of Africa's key populations of wild dogs, plus elephants, giraffes, lions and buffalo. The honest picture: it is EXPENSIVE and remote, with lodges roughly USD 400-1,200 per night, and few people. The park fee is roughly USD 60-70 per adult per day for non-residents; confirm. Most visitors fly 45 minutes from Dar es Salaam; the road takes 5-8 hours. A big dam was built upstream. Camps are small and the sense of space is the draw, with no queues of vehicles at a sighting. Bring malaria tablets, repellent and a yellow fever certificate if needed.
