Oak Hammock Marsh is a restored prairie wetland and wildlife management area about 30 km north of Winnipeg, near Stonewall. An interpretive centre run by Ducks Unlimited Canada sits beside the marsh, with a boardwalk, dyked trails and viewing mounds over open water and reeds. It is best known for huge flights of snow geese, which pass through in spring, usually late April into May, and again in autumn, with the peak commonly in October, alongside ducks, shorebirds and many other waterbirds. The land is flat, open and exposed: there is no shade, the wind can be strong, and mosquitoes are heavy in June and July. It suits birders, families with children, photographers and anyone wanting an easy nature stop from the city. Outside migration the marsh is quieter but still pleasant for a walk. Allow two to four hours, longer if you cycle the dykes. Confirm the interpretive centre hours and admission before you go, since they change by season.

The interpretive centre is usually open daily or most days through the main season, with shorter hours or reduced days in winter, so confirm the current schedule with Ducks Unlimited Canada or the centre listing before driving out. Outdoor trails, dykes and viewing mounds are generally open in daylight, but wet or flooded stretches, spring melt and storms can close or soften sections. Peak migration weeks in late April, May and October draw crowds and may extend centre activity or special events, which are announced by the centre. In deep winter the roads and trails can be icy or drifted, and services are limited. Admission may apply to the centre, while walking outdoors is often free or lower cost; confirm current charges.
