Obed Wild and Scenic River
National Wild And Scenic River · Wartburg, Tennessee
One of the original rivers protected under the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act, cutting a 500-foot sandstone gorge across the Cumberland Plateau northwest of Knoxville with almost no development along its whole protected length. Whitewater boaters run it in spring when the rain allows and not at all when it does not; climbers come year-round for what is among the best sandstone in the Southeast; and the entire unit is an International Dark Sky Park. The visitor centre in Wartburg is the only building most people ever see.
208 North Maiden Street, Wartburg, Tennessee, 37887, United States
Open 24 hours a day, year round, free — and open at night on purpose, as a certified International Dark Sky Park. Visitor centre in Wartburg generally 9 AM - 5 PM, closed some winter days.
