Ocean City

Beach Town · Ocean City, Maryland

Ten miles of Atlantic beach on a barrier island, with a three-mile boardwalk at the south end that has been running since the beginning of the last century and a wall of high-rise condominiums up the north end. The beach is free, which on this coast is not universal. Trimper's Rides at the boardwalk's end has been operating since 1893 and still runs a carousel from 1902. The inlet that made the town's fishing harbour was cut by the hurricane of 1933, which sliced the island in two overnight.

Boardwalk at Somerset Street, Ocean City, Maryland, 21842, United States

A resort town, accessible year round; the BEACH IS FREE with no badge or fee. LIFEGUARDS ARE ON DUTY IN SEASON ONLY — generally late spring to late September, during daylight hours — and the beach is unguarded outside that. The boardwalk, arcades and amusements are largely seasonal, running from spring through autumn with reduced or no operation in winter. July and August are extremely busy; early June is Senior Week. The White Marlin Open runs in August.
