Ocean City, New Jersey
Beach Town · Ocean City, New Jersey
A barrier island resort founded in 1879 by four Methodist ministers as a Christian seaside retreat, and STILL A DRY TOWN — no alcohol has been sold anywhere within the city limits for nearly a hundred and fifty years, which is the single fact that has shaped everything about it. It calls itself America's Greatest Family Resort and the claim is at least arguable: two and a half miles of boardwalk, eight miles of beach, amusement piers, minigolf and no bars at all. It is twenty minutes from Atlantic City and the two places could not be less alike.
Boardwalk, Ocean City, New Jersey, 08226, United States
A public boardwalk and town, free to walk at all hours. BEACH TAGS ARE REQUIRED AND CHECKED IN SEASON, roughly mid-June to Labor Day, and are cheap by Jersey Shore standards. IT IS A DRY TOWN — NO ALCOHOL IS SOLD ANYWHERE WITHIN THE CITY LIMITS and has not been since 1879; restaurants are BYOB or nothing and there are no bars. Beaches are widely lifeguarded in season until about 17:30 and unguarded outside it. Amusement piers and much of the boardwalk are SEASONAL, largely shut from about October to April. Parking is metered near the boardwalk, strictly enforced, with permit-only residential zones. Barrier island evacuation orders apply in hurricane season.
