Ocean Drive and Brenton Point State Park

Coastal Drive · Newport, Rhode Island

A loop of about ten miles around the southern tip of Aquidneck Island, running past the last of the Bellevue Avenue estates and out onto open rock and grass above the Atlantic. Brenton Point State Park sits at the exposed headland halfway round: free, with free parking, picnic tables and one of the most commanding ocean outlooks on the New England coast. The steady south-westerly across it has made it the best-known kite-flying ground in the region.

Ocean Drive, Newport, Rhode Island, 02840, United States

FREE and open year round, with free parking. The road is a public highway open at all times; Brenton Point State Park keeps daylight hours, generally sunrise to sunset, with free parking, restrooms and picnic areas. There is no admission and no seasonal closure. ⚠ THE ROAD IS NARROW IN PLACES WITH LIMITED SHOULDER and is shared with cyclists, runners and traffic stopping to look at the ocean — the practical hazard is other drivers sightseeing rather than the road itself. Winter storms bring spray and debris across the exposed southern stretch, and the headland has no shelter of any kind.
