Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area
State Park · Borrego Springs, California
Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area lies in the Anza-Borrego Desert region of eastern San Diego County, near Borrego Springs and the Imperial County line, and it is one of California's best-known off-highway vehicle parks. A very large area of badlands, sand hills, dry washes and eroded hills is open to dirt bikes, quads, side-by-sides, sand rails and four-wheel-drive trucks, with few of the trails and fences that govern ordinary parks. Named features include Blow Sand Hill, Devil's Slide, the Pumpkin Patch with its round sandstone concretions and the Gas Domes, where gas bubbles through gray mud - confirm access to each. A visitor centre near the ranger station offers maps - confirm hours. Camping is open and unstructured - confirm the rules. This is a desert in the full sense: dust, no shade, no services and summer heat well above 110 F, so the season runs roughly October to April. Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is a separate place next door. Plan on a full day, or a weekend if you bring a trailer and camp.
5172 Hwy 78, Borrego Springs, California, 92004, United States
The recreation area is open day and night all year, with no gate to close, but the visitor centre and ranger station keep limited hours and may close on weekdays or in summer - confirm before you drive out. A green or red OHV sticker is commonly required on the vehicle for riding, and a day-use or camping fee may apply - confirm both. The busy season runs from October to April, with holiday weekends such as Thanksgiving and New Year drawing huge crowds. From May to September the area is almost empty because of extreme heat. Flash floods and dust storms can close routes at short notice. There is no cell signal in many washes, so check State Parks notices first.
