Odessa Meteor Crater

Natural Landmark · Odessa, Texas

The scar of an iron meteorite that struck the Permian Basin somewhere in the region of sixty thousand years ago, usually described as the second largest impact crater in the United States — though it is nothing like Arizona's. Sixty thousand years of silt have filled it almost level, so what you walk is a shallow bowl in the mesquite that takes explaining before it takes seeing.

3100 Meteor Crater Road, Odessa, Texas, 79763, United States

⚠ FREE, and about five minutes off Interstate 20 — but ⚠ I COULD NOT CONFIRM WHETHER THE VISITOR CENTRE AND ITS MUSEUM ARE CURRENTLY STAFFED OR OPEN, which materially changes the visit; check before relying on facilities. ⚠ MANAGE EXPECTATIONS: roughly sixty thousand years of silt have filled the crater almost level, so this is a shallow bowl in the mesquite, NOT Arizona's Barringer Crater. No shade; carry water.
