Ohio State Reformatory
Historic Site · Mansfield, Ohio
A Romanesque castle of a prison outside Mansfield, opened in 1896 and deliberately built to look like a cathedral so that inmates might be reformed by architecture. It closed in 1990, holds the largest free-standing steel cell block in the world at six tiers, and is known to most visitors as the prison in The Shawshank Redemption.
