A town of about eight thousand in a valley behind Ventura, running east to west like the Santa Ynez and catching the same light — at sunset the Topatopa Bluffs above it turn pink for a few minutes, which locals call the Pink Moment and time their evenings around. It has been a retreat and spa town for a century and there are no chain stores by ordinance.
