Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest
National Forest · Wenatchee, Washington
Roughly four million acres on the dry eastern slope of the Cascades, the largest national forest in Washington, running from the Canadian border down past Wenatchee. It is the rain-shadow side - ponderosa pine, larch and open country rather than the dripping west - and it holds the Enchantments, whose overnight permit lottery is among the most oversubscribed in the United States. State Route 20 crosses it and is one of the great mountain roads in the country for the half of the year it is open.
215 Melody Lane, Wenatchee, Washington, 98801, United States
Open year round, all hours, but the North Cascades Highway (State Route 20) CLOSES FOR THE WINTER between Ross Dam and Mazama, typically from November until April or May - this is a scheduled annual closure, not a weather event, and it severs the northern half of the forest. Ranger stations keep business hours.
