Oklahoma History Center

Oklahoma Historical Society State History Museum And Research Library; Opened 2005 · Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

The Oklahoma Historical Society's main museum, opened in 2005 on eighteen acres across the street from the State Capitol, with 215,000 square feet of galleries covering the state from its geology and Native nations through the land runs, statehood in 1907, the oil booms, the Dust Bowl, the Tulsa Race Massacre, the Second World War and the space age. A full-size Apollo-era exhibit, aircraft hanging in the atrium, a working oil derrick outside and the reconstructed interior of a Route 66 filling station anchor the rooms, while the Oklahoma Museum of Popular Culture material, Native gallery and the research library draw regulars. The library holds the state's newspaper archive, tribal records and photographs, used heavily for family history. Outside are the Red River Journey garden walk and the Crossroads of Commerce collection.
