Olana State Historic Site
Historic House · Hudson, New York
The house Frederic Edwin Church built for himself above the Hudson at Hudson, begun in 1870 — a Persian-influenced villa of stencilled patterns and coloured tile that he designed himself after travelling in the Middle East. The 250-acre landscape is the more remarkable half: Church laid out the carriage drives, the lake and the plantings as a composition, so the estate is effectively one of his paintings built at full size.
