Olbrich Botanical Gardens
Botanical Garden · Madison, Wisconsin
Sixteen acres of outdoor gardens on the shore of Lake Monona in Madison, free to walk, with a glass pyramid conservatory of tropical plants beside them. The reason people travel for it is the Thai Pavilion — a gilded sala given by the Thai government and by Thai graduates of the University of Wisconsin, shipped in pieces and assembled here in 2001, and the only one of its kind in the continental United States. It stands in a Thai garden across a footbridge, surrounded by planting chosen to survive a Wisconsin winter while reading as tropical.

Outdoor gardens open daily, free, generally 8:00 or 9:00 to sunset with shorter winter hours. The Bolz Conservatory is ticketed and generally open 10:00 to 16:00 daily. Blooming Butterflies runs in summer and GLEAM on autumn evenings, both with their own arrangements — GLEAM is timed, separately ticketed and sells out.
