Old Cahawba Archaeological Park
National Register Of Historic Places · Orrville, Alabama
Alabama's first state capital, laid out in 1819 at the confluence of the Cahaba and Alabama rivers, abandoned as the capital in 1826 after repeated flooding, revived as a cotton river port, largely emptied after the Civil War and now a ghost town in the woods. Streets survive as avenues between trees, chimneys stand in fields where houses burned, and the cemeteries are still there. It is run by the Alabama Historical Commission as an archaeological park and it is one of the strangest and quietest places in the state.
