Old Capitol Museum
National Historic Landmark · Jackson, Mississippi
Mississippi's statehouse from 1839 to 1903, a Greek Revival building on Capitol Green in Jackson, now a free museum about itself. Three things of national consequence happened in these rooms: the state voted to secede from the Union in January 1861, the Black Codes of 1865 were written here as the template for restricting freed people across the South, and the constitutional convention of 1890 produced the poll tax and literacy test that disenfranchised Black Mississippians for seventy-five years and was copied by every other Southern state. The building was gutted by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and restored.
