Old Cowtown Museum

Open Air Museum · Wichita, Kansas

An open-air living history museum on the Arkansas River in Wichita, built as the town looked between 1865 and 1880 when it was the end of the Chisholm Trail and cattle came north by the hundred thousand. Fifty-odd buildings, about ten of them original and moved here rather than reconstructed, with costumed interpreters working the print shop, the blacksmith's forge and the general store. It sits five minutes from Botanica and ten from the zoo.

1865 West Museum Boulevard, Wichita, Kansas, 67203, United States

Open with strongly seasonal hours — fullest April - October with costumed interpreters and the re-enactment schedule; sharply reduced in winter with many buildings closed. Modest admission with reductions; FREE parking. Daily programme posted at the entrance.
