Old Fort Niagara
Fort · Youngstown, New York
A fortification at the mouth of the Niagara River where it meets Lake Ontario, held in turn by France, Britain and the United States and continuously garrisoned from 1726 until 1963 — one of the longest occupations of any post in North America. The FRENCH CASTLE of 1726 is the oldest building in the Great Lakes region, disguised as a trading house so the Seneca would permit its construction.
