Old Port
Heritage District · Portland, Maine
Portland's waterfront district, rebuilt in brick and cobblestone after the Great Fire of 1866 destroyed most of the city, and now the centre of a food scene that draws people to Maine on its own account. It is a working port as well as a destination - fishing boats unload at the wharves before the restaurants open - and that combination is what separates it from a preserved district.
Commercial Street, Portland, Maine, 04101, United States
The district is open at all times and FREE to walk. Shops keep daytime hours, restaurants and bars run late, and the working waterfront starts before dawn. ⚠ PARKING IS THE PROBLEM: it is metered on-street and in garages, enforced strictly, and the free parking people expect does not exist. Winter is quieter with some seasonal businesses closed, though the restaurants stay open.
