Old State Capitol State Historic Site
Historic Site · Springfield, Illinois
The Greek Revival statehouse that served as Illinois' capitol from 1839 to 1876, and the building in which Abraham Lincoln did most of his public work — he argued cases in the Supreme Court chamber, borrowed books from the state library, delivered the House Divided speech in 1858 and lay in state here in 1865. Barack Obama announced his presidential candidacy on its steps in 2007. It is free.
